A frase que você citou não foi dita por Wightman, mas por Res Jost, mais “conhecido” 😦 pela primeira demonstração (rigorosa, vejam bem) do teorema PCT — falando de seta do tempo… 😈
Conforme citado no volume 4 do Reed-Simon, “In the thirties, under the demoralizing influence of quantum-theoretic perturbation theory, the mathematics required of a theoretical physicist was reduced to a rudimentary knowledge of the Latin and Greek alphabets.”

Sensacional — o que eu estava procurando mesmo era essa referência pro Reed-Simon: eu sabia que já tinha lido isso em algum lugar mas não conseguia me lembrar onde… procurei num monte de “possíveis culpados”… mas, claro, o Reed-Simon passou longe. 😉
